A delegation from the Ministry of Culture, during a field visit to the Citadel of Simeon in the western Aleppo countryside, explored ways to develop a strategic plan for rehabilitating the site and reopening it to visitors, thereby enhancing its status as a tourist and cultural destination. The delegation included Mr. Ahmed Khnous, representing the office of the Deputy Minister of Culture, and Dr. Masoud Badawi, Director General of the Directorate of Antiquities and Museums, along with several directors of central antiquities in Damascus and the directors of antiquities in Aleppo and Idlib. They discussed with the local administration the necessary measures to protect and preserve the site. The citadel holds historical and geographical significance due to its connection to the Church of Saint Simeon Stylites, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and because it stands as a testament to the succession of civilizations in northern Syria. This initiative is part of the Ministry of Culture's plan to revitalize archaeological sites in various governorates and promote their role as tourist and cultural landmarks that reflect the richness and continuity of Syrian civilization throughout history.
